Martin Spangenberg, the clarinettist, was the principal clarinettist with the Munich Philharmonic from 1988 to 2003 and has been a professor at the Franz Liszt Hochschule für Musik in Weimar since 1997.

Martin Spangenberg, the clarinettist on this recording, plays a specially commissioned copy of an Ottensteiner instrument, similar to one played by Richard Mühlfeld, who inspired Brahms's late clarinet works.

The Abegg Trio, consisting of Ulrich Beetz (violin), Birgit Erichson (cello), and Gerrit Zitterbart (piano), celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2006, having performed together since 1976.
