Melani Mestre, the pianist and conductor on this album, directly inherited the cherished Catalan piano tradition of Enrique Granados through his teachers, who were disciples of Frank Marshall.

Albéniz, who was not always confident in his orchestration skills, asked his friend Tomás Bretón to help him orchestrate both the 'Concierto fantástico' and the 'Rapsodia española'.

Enrique Granados, another composer on this album, tragically drowned in 1916 after his ship was torpedoed, attempting to save his wife who was struggling in the water.
Composition History
Albéniz's only piano concerto, 'Concierto fantástico', and his 'Rapsodia española' were both completed in 1887, during a period when he was inspired by his teacher Felipe Pedrell to evoke Spanish sounds in his music.

Recording & Production
The version of Albéniz's 'Rapsodia española' on this recording uses an orchestration found in a manuscript from a 1889 concert in San Sebastián, likely by Albéniz or Tomás Bretón.
