1/6Composition History
Thomas Jennefelt's radio opera, Albert and Julia, premiered simultaneously on two Swedish Radio channels, P1 and P2, in the winter of 1988.
Recording & Production
Swedish Radio provided extensive resources for the recording, including a large mixing desk and multitrack recorder, to create the radiophonic landscape.
Cultural Impact
The original play, Albert and Julia by Erik Johan Stagnelius, was important for Swedish Romanticism due to its provocative depiction of erotic and sensual love, rather than platonic love.
Composer Biography
The idea for the opera came from Ingrid Kallenbäck, Thomas Jennefelt's future wife, who had written a radio play about Erik Johan Stagnelius's last days.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Composer Thomas Jennefelt viewed the strong passion of Albert and Julia as a symbol of defiance against conventions and duties, rather than a purely religious battle between heaven and hell.
Compositional Technique
Thomas Jennefelt used a wind quintet for heavenly scenes and a thundering symphonic orchestra for hellish scenes to musically represent the polarity in the opera.
