Giovanni Albini, born in 1982, has nine string quartets composed between 2003 and 2018, which serve as a record of his compositional activity.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Giovanni Albini approaches composition with abstract musical materials in a mathematical-geometrical way, using rigid schemes or numeric devices to magnify the personal and subjective nature of his musical world.
Compositional Technique
Albini's String Quartet No.8, subtitled 'Il Principe' (The Prince), is dedicated to the Renaissance master Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa and is based on the first five bars of Gesualdo's madrigal 'Moro, lasso, al mio duolo'.
Composer Biography
Giovanni Albini has a diverse academic background, having studied Composition at several conservatories, Mathematics at the University of Pavia, and Classical Guitar at the Conservatory 'Franco Vittadini' of Pavia.
Compositional Technique
Albini frequently uses palindromic structures in his quartets, from a full palindromic structure in the second movement of String Quartet No.1 to the entire String Quartet No.6 and No.9.
Performer Biography
Quartetto Indaco, the ensemble performing on this album, was formed in 2007 at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole and has received numerous awards in music competitions.
