Composer Biography

Albinoni, a Venetian, came from a family of playing card manufacturers and initially styled himself a 'dilettante' or serious amateur musician.

Compositional Technique

Albinoni titled these works 'Concerti a cinque con oboe' (Concertos for five with oboe) rather than 'per oboe' (for oboe), emphasizing the near-equal importance of the violin parts.

Recording & Production

The Collegium Musicum 90, founded by Simon Standage and the late Richard Hickox, has an exclusive contract with Chandos Records and has released over sixty critically acclaimed CDs.

Compositional Technique

Albinoni frequently used a three-movement structure (fast-slow-fast) and a 'motto' theme that introduces each musical section, a technique also found in da capo arias.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Albinoni's instrumental music is deeply influenced by vocal music, featuring long, singable lines reminiscent of operatic 'bel canto'.

Compositional Technique

In some concertos, Albinoni's oboes imitate natural trumpets, and two concertos from Op. 9 are explicitly 'hunting' and 'military' concertos, evoking horns or fifes and drums.
