Carl Jonas Love Almqvist (1793-1866), the composer featured on this album, was considered a man of contradictions, often finding himself between conservative romantics and utilitarian liberals.

Almqvist's life was marked by turbulence, growing up in the shadow of the French Revolution and Napoleonic campaigns, which influenced his inquiring mind.

The recording features a fortepiano signed by Conrad Graf, Vienna, circa 1829, and an organ built in the 1840s by Per Zacharias Strand.
