Compositional Technique
Lyadov made about 200 arrangements of Russian folksongs, using polyphonic techniques to reflect traditional performance styles and reveal modal and harmonic features of folk tradition.
Composer Biography
Anatoly Lyadov studied composition with Rimsky-Korsakov at the St Petersburg Conservatoire, where he later became a teacher.
Critical Reception
While Lyadov's symphonic and piano miniatures are well-known, his choral works, including original compositions, have remained largely undiscovered until this album.

Anatoly Lyadov was born into a highly musical family, with his grandfather, father, four uncles, and two aunts all being musicians.

This album features the first recordings of all Lyadov's original choral works, with the exception of one piece.

Lyadov is known as a composer of miniatures, with his ideal being to find 'the unearthly in art' and to make 'every bar gratifying'.
