1/6Historical Context
The etude, a musical form originally for technical study, was reimagined by Chopin to express deep emotions and continues to flourish in modern Denmark, where composers enjoy strict creative criteria.
Compositional Technique
Each animal etude is structured in three movements: a 'Concert etude' for advanced players, a 'light etude' for intermediate students, and a 'very simple etude' for beginners.
Composition History
Pianist Christina Bjørkøe commissioned 12 Danish composers to create a cycle of piano etudes, each based on a different animal, for her students at the Danish National Academy of Music.
Performer Biography
Christina Bjørkøe, the pianist on this album, is one of Denmark's leading musicians and an associate professor at the Danish National Academy of Music.
Composer's Artistic Vision
The etudes were designed to have a strong poetic content, connecting technical focus with an immediate sense of fun by associating them with animals, making them relatable for both children and adults.
Recording & Production
This album features world premiere recordings of all the etudes, which were recorded at the Danish National Academy of Music in Odense.
