Mozart's opera 'La clemenza di Tito' was commissioned by the Bohemian Estates to celebrate the 1791 coronation of Leopold II as king of Bohemia.

Franco Fagioli, the counter-tenor on this album, began his musical journey as a child singing the first boy in Mozart's opera, 'Die Zauberflöte'.

Composition History

Mozart reused eight movements from his Salzburg Mass in C Minor for 'Davidde penitente', a cantata for a Vienna Tonkünstler-Sozietät benefit concert, adding a cadenza and two new movements.

Critical Reception

Mozart's 'La clemenza di Tito' received exceptional applause at its final performance in Prague on September 30, 1791, the same evening his new opera 'Die Zauberflöte' premiered to great acclaim.

Franco Fagioli, the counter-tenor, initially studied piano because he wanted to produce Mozart's music with an instrument, not just his voice.

Compositional Technique

The aria 'Parto, parto' from Mozart's 'La clemenza di Tito' features an obbligato part for the clarinet that is as virtuosic and touching as the vocal part, written for his friend Anton Stadler.
