Composition History

Handel's oratorio 'Judas Maccabaeus' was composed in 1746 as a compliment to Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, upon his victorious return from the Battle of Culloden.

Interpretation

The performances of oratorios and masses at Maulbronn Monastery use historically informed performance practices, featuring reconstructed historical instruments tuned to the pitch customary in the composers' lifetimes (a' = 415 Hz).

Recording & Production

The K&K Verlagsanstalt aims to capture the unique atmosphere of live concerts by recording them in direct 2-Track Stereo digital, creating 'audiophile snapshots of permanent value'.

Historical Context

The Maulbronn Monastery, where these concerts were recorded, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only completely preserved medieval monastery north of the Alps.

This album celebrates 50 years of the Maulbronn Monastery Concerts and 20 years of the K&K Verlagsanstalt's 'edition Kloster Maulbronn' recording series.

Instruments

For the Haydn/de Fossa 'Grand Duos pour deux Guitares', the performers use replicas of 19th-century Viennese guitars built by a Mr. Staufer, rather than modern concert guitars.
