Composition History

Anthony Cheung's null and void was commissioned by Cologne's Acht Brücken music festival to accompany the short silent film Stump the Guesser by Canadian filmmakers Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson.

Compositional Technique

In A line can go anywhere, Cheung treats the piano as an object made of wires, using its signature sound envelope of strong attack and decaying resonance to explore the dialogue between line, space, and shadow.

Performer Biography

Ueli Wiget, the pianist on this album, studied at Budapest's Liszt Academy under György Kurtàg and Zoltàn Kocsis and has been a pianist with the Ensemble Modern since 1986.
