Recording & Production

The recording used a minimalist technique with a single AKG C-24 stereo microphone, customized vacuum tube preamplifiers, and a short signal path to achieve a sound close to the live event.

Composition History

José Bragato, a renowned cellist and close friend of Astor Piazzolla, initially refused to arrange Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango for Antonio Lysy, but later provided an arrangement as an unexpected gift.

Recording & Production

This album, Antonio Lysy at The Broad: Music from Argentina, won Yarlung Records' first GRAMMY® Award and was praised by The Absolute Sound as one of the 40 best recordings of all time.

Compositional Technique

Ginastera's Puneña No. 2, Op. 45, incorporates the 'soggetto cavato' compositional technique, using the notes E-flat, A, C, B, E, and D, derived from the name SACHER, to honor conductor Paul Sacher.

Composer's Artistic Vision

The composers on this album, following Alberto Ginastera's lead, draw inspiration from Argentine folk music traditions, such as Inca and gaucho rhythms and melodies, to create concert music.

Performer Biography

Antonio Lysy, the cellist on this recording, is the son of famed Argentine violinist Alberto Lysy, who was a protégé of legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin.

José Bragato, an Italian-born cellist, dedicated his life to both classical and popular music, including playing with outstanding tango orchestras and incorporating the cello into the typical tango orchestra.
