Kurt Atterberg (1887-1974) was a highly versatile Swedish composer, producing six operas, five concertos, and nine symphonies, among many other works.
Critical Reception
Atterberg's 'Dollar Symphony' was the subject of massive debate and criticism, with some calling it a 'joke' or 'simple potpourri', partly due to perceived nationalistic voting by the jury.
Composition History
Atterberg's Symphony No. 6, nicknamed 'Dollar Symphony', won first prize in a 1928 international competition to compose a work in the spirit of Schubert, earning him $10,000.

Besides composing, Atterberg worked full-time at the Swedish National Patent and Registration Office from 1912, becoming Division Head in 1936, and only retired at 81.
Notable Performances
Atterberg's Symphony No. 6 was the first work ever to be recorded before its public premiere, with Sir Thomas Beecham conducting the Columbia Phonograph Company recording on August 12, 1928.
Composition History
En värmlandsrapsodi was composed in just one week by Atterberg for a radio broadcast celebrating the 75th birthday of Swedish Nobel Prize-winning novelist Selma Lagerlöf.
