Christoph Sietzen, the percussionist on this album, debuted at the Salzburg Festival at age twelve and began teaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna at 22.
Performer Biography
Christoph Sietzen studied marimba and percussion, and also string bass and harpsichord to immerse himself in Baroque music.
Compositional Technique
John Psathas's "One Study One Summary" innovatively uses everyday objects, referred to as 'junk percussion,' including saucepans, pans, and salad bowls.
Recording & Production
The album features a world premiere recording of Arvo Pärt's "Variations for the Healing of Arinushka," arranged for marimba solo by Christoph Sietzen and authorized by the composer.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Arvo Pärt's music on this album is based on simple tonal melodies framed by a triad, which he described as having a "bell-like effect," leading to his 'Tintinnabuli' style.
Interpretation
Despite Iannis Xenakis's insistence on performing his works "as written, at the written tempos," the piece "Rebonds" is almost impossible to perform at its original tempos, leading to varied interpretations.
Composer Biography
Stewart Copeland, co-founder and drummer of The Police, has been commissioned to compose a new work for Christoph Sietzen's ECHO Rising Stars concert tour.
