Composition History
Alexander Glazunov, a former prodigy nearing 70, was inspired to compose his Saxophone Quartet and a subsequent saxophone concerto after becoming infatuated with the instrument during his exile in Paris.
Compositional Technique
Glazunov's Saxophone Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 109, has a symphonic scope and includes a theme with five variations at its core, similar to his Sixth Symphony.
