Johann Nikolaus Forkel, a German musicologist, wrote one of the earliest biographies of Johann Sebastian Bach, titled "Ueber Johann Sebastian Bachs Leben, Kunst und Kunstwerke" (1802).
Recording & Production
The Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) on this album were recorded in September 2000 at Kartause Mauerbach, while other works were recorded in January 1995 at Funkhaus Wien.
Composition History
The Goldberg Variations were commissioned by Count Kaiserling, the Russian Ambassador to the Electoral Saxon Court, to help him with his sleepless nights.
Compositional Technique
The Goldberg Variations include canons at every interval from the unison to the ninth, a four-part fugue, and a Quodlibet.
Instruments
Wolfgang Glüxam performs on a two-manual Franco-Flemish harpsichord built by Willem Kroesbergen in Utrecht in 1986, tuned to Werckmeister III temperament at a'=415 Hz.
