1/7Compositional Technique
Bach's overtures typically begin with a grave, repeated section featuring dotted rhythms and orchestral gestures, followed by a faster, often fugal, second section.
Composition History
Bach's increased use of overtures in his cantatas, particularly the French overture form, was a consequence of the Leipzig city council's desire for a modern Kapellmeister who would bring courtly brilliance to church music.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Rudolf Lutz, the musical director, aims to create a 'living Bach' experience for contemporary listeners, grounded in historical knowledge.
Interpretation
The J.S. Bach Foundation performs one cantata monthly in Trogen, Switzerland, where conductor Rudolf Lutz and theologian Karl Graf introduce the work, and the cantata is played twice with a 'reflection' lecture in between.

The J.S. Bach Foundation St. Gallen, funded by private means, is undertaking a 25-year project to re-interpret Bach's complete vocal works, focusing on over 200 cantatas.
