This album was recorded live at the Muziekcentrum van de Omroep in Hilversum, Netherlands, in July 2022.
Composition History
Bartók composed his Concerto for Orchestra in 1943 while ill in a hospital bed, after conductor Sergei Koussevitzsky offered him $1000 to write an orchestral work for the Boston Symphony.
Compositional Technique
The second movement of the Concerto for Orchestra, titled 'Presentando le coppie,' features instrumental couples in a flamboyant fashion, uniquely orchestrated with a snare drum commentator.
Composer Biography
Béla Bartók, an outspoken anti-fascist, fled Europe in 1940 with his wife due to the terrifying political situation and his anti-Nazi sentiments.
