This album was recorded in January 2020 at the Cité de la Musique - Philharmonie de Paris, using historical instruments from the Musée de la musique's collection.
Composition History
Beethoven composed his two Cello Sonatas, Op. 5, for Jean-Pierre Duport, the King's first cellist, and himself during his Berlin visit in June 1796.
Instruments
The piano on this recording is a grand piano built around 1855 by C.J. Gebauhr of Königsberg, a renowned German instrument maker of the 19th century.
Instruments
The cello used in this recording was made by Pietro Guarneri of Venice in 1734, one of only about ten known cellos by this maker.
Compositional Technique
Beethoven's Op. 5 Cello Sonatas are among the earliest pieces for cello where the keyboard part is fully written out, balancing the two instruments.
Performer Biography
Raphaël Pidoux, the cellist, is a member of the acclaimed Wanderer Trio, which has performed in major venues worldwide and received numerous awards for its recordings.
