Composition History
Beethoven's Trio Op.38 is a reworking of his popular Septet, Op.20, which he rearranged in 1803 due to its extreme popularity overshadowing his newer works.
Instruments
Kyril Zlotnikov, the cellist, plays a 1710 Giovanni Battista Ruggieri cello, which was generously loaned to him from a private collection for life.
Compositional Technique
When Beethoven re-voiced his Septet to create the Op.38 Trio, he reassigned much of the original string music to the piano, while the clarinet retained much of its material.
Composition History
Brahms decided to retire from composition in 1890, but was inspired to write four new works, including the Clarinet Trio, after hearing clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld perform in 1891.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Beethoven dedicated his Op.38 Trio to his physician, Dr. Johann Schmidt, a violinist, and gave him exclusive rights to the score for a year.
