Dino Ciani, the pianist on this album, was born in Fiume (now in Croatia) on June 16, 1941.

As a child, Dino Ciani had perfect pitch and could play three pages of Beethoven's First Piano Concerto after hearing it once, without ever reading the score.

Dino Ciani's career was tragically cut short when he died in a road accident on March 27, 1974, near Rome.

This album is a live recording of Dino Ciani's complete Beethoven piano sonata cycle, performed in eight concerts in Turin between October 4 and November 29, 1970.

Dino Ciani won the Beethoven competition in Vienna in May 1961 and was runner-up in the Liszt-Bartok competition in Budapest a few months later.
Interpretation
Dino Ciani's interpretive style for 19th-century repertoire seemed to revive aspects of the brilliant, virtuoso Biedermeier piano playing that was often undervalued at the time.
