Idil Biret, the pianist on this recording, began playing piano at age three and studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Nadia Boulanger, graduating at fifteen with three first prizes.

Beethoven's first two piano sonatas, Op. 2, Nos. 1 and 2, were dedicated to Joseph Haydn, his teacher.
