Ensemble 18+, founded in 2009, is a chamber orchestra that focuses on historically informed performances of 18th-century music, mimicking the setup of Jiří Antonín Benda's orchestra.
Composer's Artistic Vision
In a letter from Baden to Archduke Rudolph in August 1810, Beethoven jokingly referred to these two Marches as his 'music for horses'.
Compositional Technique
Beethoven's Marches, which he preferred to call 'tattoos', are scored for military band and include traditional percussion imported under Turkish influence.
Composition History
Beethoven's first two military marches were written in 1809 for the Bohemia militia and dedicated to Archduke Anton, an older brother of his friend and pupil Archduke Rudolph.
Composition History
The first march, also known as the 'Yorck March', was rewritten to be played with the second march on August 2, 1810, for Archduke Rudolph's mother's birthday celebration.
Performer Biography
Marek Štilec, the conductor, began his musical studies on the violin at the Prague Conservatory and later studied conducting at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.
