Composition History
Beethoven's two Sonatas Op. 14 were dedicated to Baroness Josefine von Braun, whose husband was a successful businessman and lessee of the National-Theater and Theater-an-der-Wien.
Performer Biography
Idil Biret, the pianist on this album, began playing piano at age three and studied at the Paris Conservatoire, graduating at fifteen with three first prizes.
Compositional Technique
Beethoven designated both his Sonatas, Op. 27, with the subtitle 'Sonata quasi una fantasia', which Thayer described as 'a departure from the customary structure'.

Idil Biret was a pupil of Alfred Cortot, a renowned French pianist and conductor, and a lifelong disciple of Wilhelm Kempff, a celebrated German pianist.

The IBA emblem features an etching by Albrecht Dürer, a German Renaissance artist, given to Idil Biret by her mentor Nadia Boulanger in 1959.
