Frans Brüggen, a renowned recorder virtuoso, founded the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century at the age of 47.
Performer Biography
Before becoming a conductor, Frans Brüggen, as a traveling recorder soloist, would visit music libraries between concerts to study old orchestra parts and search for performance instructions.

The Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century consists exclusively of specialized musicians who have mastered an 18th-century instrument and are willing to view their playing technique as an ongoing experiment.
Interpretation
Frans Brüggen founded the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century in 1981 as a "counterstrike" against existing symphony orchestras that seemed uninterested in their roots and conducting practices that disregarded the origins and sound of 18th-century music.
Recording & Production
This new complete recording of Beethoven's nine symphonies was made possible by the prestigious Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Award, which Frans Brüggen and his orchestra received in 2010.
Interpretation
Frans Brüggen's Beethoven performances avoid clichés of both "authentic performance style" and modern orchestral practice, with every note, including seemingly minor parts, contributing to shock effects and vivid rhythms.
