Performer Biography

Jean-Guihen Queyras, the cellist and artistic director, was named 'Instrumental Soloist of the Year' at the Victoires de la Musique Classique in March 2008 and 'Artist of the Year' by Diapason magazine in November 2008.

Compositional Technique

Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) is explicitly based on a poem by Richard Dehmel, which tells the story of a couple's night walk where the woman confesses she is carrying another man's child.

Interpretation

This album features the first known recording of Theo Verbey's arrangement for string ensemble of movements I, V, and VI of Berg's Lyric Suite.

Composition History

Alban Berg's Lyric Suite was premiered as a string quartet in Vienna in 1927 by the Kolisch Quartet, and later, a string orchestra version of three movements was first performed in Berlin in 1929.

Compositional Technique

Alban Berg paid tribute to his friend Alexander Zemlinsky, a composer and conductor, by structuring his Lyric Suite with six movements, imitating Zemlinsky's Lyric Symphony, and quoting it at twenty points.
