Composition History

Christian Lindberg spent five years convincing Iannis Xenakis to write a trombone concerto, and almost as long with Luciano Berio, before his reputation grew to the point where Mark-Anthony Turnage specifically requested to dedicate a piece to him.

Critical Reception

After the London premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage's Yet Another Set To, the Financial Times described it as a "highly charged" piece, suggesting the album should be labeled "highly inflammable - handle with care!"

Recording & Production

This Hybrid SACD offers both Stereo (CD and SACD) and 5.0 Surround sound (SACD), with the surround sound aiming to reproduce the natural concert venue sound using full frequency range for all five channels.

Compositional Technique

Luciano Berio's SOLO for trombone and orchestra is described by the composer as less of a concerto and more a "meeting of two individuals," where the trombone and orchestra parts are like two separate lines that don't truly "speak" to each other.
