Lennox Berkeley, the composer, became a Roman Catholic in 1928 and remained devout throughout his life, attending Mass every Sunday.

This album features recordings from the Richard Itter Broadcast Collection, a lifelong project by Richard Itter to record BBC transmissions from 1952-1996.

In 1973, Lennox Berkeley received a Papal Knighthood of St Gregory for his work for the Church, a year before his royal ennoblement.

Lennox Berkeley believed that music's most important contact with the listener is spiritual, stating that "the best music is that which communicates the most strongly and the most urgently on that level."

Recording & Production

The Lyrita Recorded Edition Trust began transferring Richard Itter's priceless archive in 2014, with formal agreements to release items to the public.
