Pierre Monteux's success in conducting French repertoire was partly due to his close personal relationships with many of the composers whose works he performed.

Claude Debussy, a French composer, was very particular about dynamics, once shouting at Pierre Monteux during a rehearsal, 'Monteux, that's a forte, and when I write a forte, I want a forte!'

This album includes a recording of Charles Munch conducting the Boston Symphony in Haydn's Symphony No. 102, bringing together two great French conductors of this orchestra.

Pierre Monteux was the chief conductor of the Boston Symphony between 1919 and 1924, rebuilding the orchestra after the First World War.
