Thomas Adès's 'Powder Her Face' opera, from which the Three-piece Suite is drawn, is based on the life of Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll, whose scandalous divorce made headlines in 1963.
Compositional Technique
For his opera 'Powder Her Face', Thomas Adès was restricted to 15 instrumentalists due to the Almeida Theatre's small size, but he made them play an extensive array of instruments, including fishing reels, a doorbell, and many saxophones.
Recording & Production
The recording of Jonathan Dove's 'Stargazer' on this album came about because it couldn't fit on a previous 80-minute CD of Dove's orchestral music.

Timothy Redmond, the conductor on this album, has conducted Thomas Adès's opera 'Powder Her Face' more than anyone else and edited the published score of Adès's opera 'The Tempest'.
