Ronald Binge began his musical career as an organist in a local cinema at age seventeen, as his family could not afford for him to attend music college.

Recording & Production

The conductor of this album, Ernest Tomlinson, was asked by Binge's widow, Vera, to conduct the recording because she trusted him to interpret the music correctly.

Cultural Impact

Ronald Binge's 'Elizabethan Serenade' was chosen as the signature tune for the BBC's 'Music Tapestry' series and was used daily as the late-night play-out for the British Forces Network radio station in Germany.

Compositional Technique

Ronald Binge developed a 'cascading strings' effect, known as the 'Mantovani sound', by using a large string section and dividing violins into multiple parts to simulate reverberation.
