Composer Biography
After the premiere of his opera Antigono in 1756, Gluck was rewarded with a knighthood, and thereafter always signed himself 'Cavaliere', 'Chevalier' or 'Ritter' Gluck.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Gluck considered his opera Armide to be "perhaps the best of my operas," one that must "arouse a voluptuous sensation."
Composition History
Gluck's opera Alceste, first performed in Vienna in 1767, included a manifesto in its score outlining the reformist principles of Gluck and his librettist Ranieri de' Calzabigi.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Christoph Willibald Gluck, the composer, believed his presence at performances of his operas was as vital as the sun to creation.
Compositional Technique
Gluck, like Bach and Handel, was known for reusing his own music, with some arias appearing in multiple operas.
