Despite its high quality, Bliss's solo piano music remains little known and was not considered important during his lifetime, even by those who wrote on him.

Bliss's first piano piece appeared soon after Louis Blériot's pioneering flight across the English Channel in 1909, and his last, Triptych, followed the inaugural flight of the Concorde in 1969.

Sir Arthur Bliss, the composer, volunteered for the British Army within two days of war being declared in August 1914, later serving with distinction in the Grenadier Guards.
