Interpretation
For the Stabat Mater, the performers chose a string quintet with cello and double bass, rather than two cellos, to enlarge the harmonic spectrum and sound space.
Compositional Technique
Luigi Boccherini's String Quintet 'La Musica Notturna delle Strade di Madrid' uses extravagant musical means, such as violins imitating bells and cellos strummed like guitars.

This album was recorded in two sessions in 2018: April 17-19 at the Église évangélique luthérienne Saint-Pierre, Paris, and September 1-3 at the Hôtel de l'Industrie, Paris.
Composer Biography
Luigi Boccherini, the composer, spent forty years in Spain, married two Spanish women, and traveled extensively across the Iberian Peninsula.
Instruments
Ophélie Gaillard, the cellist and conductor on this album, plays a Francesco Goffriller cello from 1737, on loan from the CIC.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Luigi Boccherini, the composer, believed that "music without emotions and passions is meaningless," as he wrote in a 1799 letter.
