Composition History

The years 1773-76 were a period when Boccherini composed many flute works, possibly due to a great flautist residing in or passing through Madrid, where Boccherini worked for Infante Don Luis.

Compositional Technique

The Quintetto G.443, attributed to Boccherini, features an ingenious set of theme and variations on the simplest of ground basses: a C major scale.

Interpretation

The performers undertook musical 'sleuthing' to interpret discrepancies in existing editions, including opus numbers, interpretative terms like 'portato' and 'Rinforzo', and inconsistencies in Boccherini's handwriting.

Sally Walker, the flutist on this album, is a performer, academic, and music educator who has a long-standing association as Guest Principal Flautist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

Boccherini's Sei Quintetti Op.19, composed in 1774, each have only two movements, reflecting an intimate character unlike the more common four-movement structure of his northern European contemporaries.
