1/7Instruments
The Bogenhausers used the trumpet marine not as a trumpet substitute, as was common in the Baroque era, but as a one-stringed bass instrument.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Unlike other early music ensembles, the Bogenhausers played out of pure curiosity and joy, not academic interest, on their unusual instruments.
Instruments
The Bogengitarre, a rare Romantic nine-stringed instrument, was tuned a minor third higher than a normal guitar, and for the Bogenhausers' transposition, only needed to be tuned a semitone higher.
Historical Context
The ensemble's origins trace back to a collection of original Baroque wind instruments owned by the family of Munich sculptor Wilhelm Düll since the late 1870s.
Composition History
The Bogenhauser Künstlerkapelle (Artists' Band of Bogenhausen) was active from 1899 to 1939 and featured an unusual lineup of four recorders, Bogengitarre (harp-guitar), trumpet marine, and timpani.
Instruments
The Bogenhausers invented their own transposed notation, where the music was played a fourth higher than written, or a major third higher relative to A=440 Hz.
Recording & Production
The ensemble arcimboldo, led by Thilo Hirsch, reconstructed the Bogenhausers' repertoire using original instrumentation after extensive research into surviving materials.
