The Three Études for Piano were commissioned by the New Ross Piano Festival in 2018 and are dedicated to pianist Finghin Collins, who gave their first performance.

Emma Coulthard, one of the flautists on this album, was also a former pupil of Doris Keogh, the composer's flute teacher.

John Buckley, the composer, studied flute with Doris Keogh, a legendary flautist and teacher at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, who greatly encouraged his early compositions.

Compositional Technique

The piece 'Sea Echoes' for solo flute uses a sliding head-joint, a recent innovation by American flautist Robert Dick, to achieve true glissando effects.
