William Bolcom, the composer, studied composition with Darius Milhaud and Olivier Messiaen.

Compositional Technique

Frescoes, one of Bolcom's most powerful works, was inspired by the rapid painting and grand vision of fresco technique, and its score incorporates aleatoric improvisation and unsynchronized playing.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Bolcom's mature compositional style, developed after his discovery of ragtime, blends popular and classical idioms into a distinctively American eclecticism.

Composition History

Recuerdos, a piece inspired by late 19th-century Latin American dances, was written for and first performed at the Murray Dranoff Two-Piano Competition in 1991.

Performer Biography

Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann, the piano duo on this album, received first prize at the International Chamber Music Competition in Caltanissetta, Italy, and were laureates of The Fourth Murray Dranoff International Two Piano Competition.
