Bomtempo's twelve piano sonatas were composed during his stays in Paris and London and published by Leduc, Pleyel, and Clementi.

Bomtempo founded the Sociedade Philarmónica, a concert society for orchestral concerts, and became the first director of the Lisbon Conservatory.

Eleven of Bomtempo's sonatas were reprinted in 1980 by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation as a facsimile volume.
