João Domingos Bomtempo, a Portuguese composer, was the son of an Italian oboist in the Royal Court of Lisbon's orchestra.

Upon returning to Lisbon in 1820, Bomtempo founded the Philharmonic Society in 1822 and was appointed Director of the Lisbon Conservatory of Music in 1833.
Compositional Technique
The Second Symphony by Bomtempo is more Romantic in style and larger in scope, with its first movement's size reminiscent of Beethoven's Eroica Symphony.

The First Symphony by Bomtempo shows the influence of Haydn and Mozart, following a classical form, though its second movement is a Menuet instead of the usual Andante.
