Max Reger's Clarinet Sonatas op. 49 were written to challenge himself against Brahms's two sonatas op. 120, and his Clarinet Quintet op. 146 likely had a similar inspiration.

Brahms's Clarinet Quintet op. 115 was the first and most generous fruit of his epiphany after hearing clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld play in 1891.
