Composition History
These sonatas were originally intended for clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, whom Brahms admired for his warm sound and unpretentious playing technique.
Compositional Technique
To adapt the Sonatas for viola, Brahms completely rewrote some figurations, added double strings, filled rests, and embellished the melody line with additional notes.
Recording & Production
This album is part of a larger project to record all of Brahms's chamber music with the same musicians.
Notable Performances
The original clarinet sonatas were premiered on September 19, 1894, at a private concert in Berchtesgaden for the Duke and Duchess of Meiningen.
Composition History
The Two Sonatas for Clarinet and Piano Opus 120, which are adapted for viola on this album, were Johannes Brahms's last chamber works, composed in the summer of 1894.

Johannes Brahms, the composer, cherished chamber music ensembles and composed for them throughout his entire life, being equally comfortable writing for duets and sextets.
