Britain's Glory
Did you know?
1/7Composer Biography
Joseph Haydn, often called the 'inventor' of the symphony and string quartet, began earning his living as a freelance composer after being pensioned from the Esterházy'sche Hofkapelle at almost 60 years old.
Historical Context
The term 'canzonetta' for these songs was a concession to British taste, where this Italian Renaissance term for secular vocal pieces remained popular and signified 'lighter' songs.
Compositional Technique
In his English Canzonettas, Haydn developed a more sophisticated treatment of vocal and piano parts, making the voice an equal partner rather than merely an 'augmentation' of the piano.
Composition History
Haydn's English Canzonettas were composed during two successful, longer visits to London in 1791/92 and 1794/95, arranged by impresario Johann Peter Salomon.
Performer Biography
Richard Fuller, the fortepiano player on this album, is known for his interpretations of Viennese Classical and early Romantic piano and Lied repertoire, performed on the fortepiano.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Haydn appreciated and treated women as equals on an artistic level, finding a friend and muse in the composer and lyric poet Anne Hunter, whose verse inspired most of his 'Original Canzonettas'.
Performer Biography
Cornelia Horak, the soprano on this album, is a highly sought-after opera and concert singer who has performed in major venues across Europe and won the Dutch International Vocal Competition s'Hertogenbosch.
