A striking feature of Bruckner's Symphony No. 6 is its contrast between dark minor and bright major modes, evident in themes and rhythmic interplay.
Compositional Technique
Bruckner's Symphony No. 6 is shorter than his other mature symphonies and features outer movements that behave more like a conventional Classical symphony, with relatively fast pacing.
Composition History
Bruckner composed his Symphony No. 6 during a low point in his career, following the catastrophic premiere of his Symphony No. 3 in 1878.
Recording & Production
This recording of Bruckner's Symphony No. 6 is the world premiere recording of the Urtext Edition by Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs.
Critical Reception
The Symphony No. 6 has historically been the least popular of Bruckner's symphonies from No. 3 onwards, possibly due to its deviations from his typical 'cathedrals in sound' style.
Performer Biography
Sir Simon Rattle, the conductor on this album, has made over 70 recordings for EMI (now Warner Classics) and received numerous international awards.
