Composer Biography
Alexander Zemlinsky's early career was significantly boosted when Johannes Brahms recommended his Clarinet Trio, Op. 3, to a publisher.
Composition History
Anton Bruckner's String Quintet in F Major was commissioned by the Viennese violinist and conductor Josef Hellmesberger Sr., who admired Bruckner's symphonies.
Composition History
The Intermezzo for String Quintet by Anton Bruckner was composed as a replacement for the original Scherzo of his F Major Quintet, which Josef Hellmesberger Sr. found too difficult.
Compositional Technique
Bruckner's String Quintet in F Major, his only completed chamber music work, has symphonic dimensions and uses thematic work and variation techniques reminiscent of his orchestral symphonies.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Johannes Brahms, a mentor to Zemlinsky, once presented Mozart's string quintets as the "resplendent, unattainable" model for the genre, despite Zemlinsky's admiration for Brahms.
