Performer Biography

Kathryn Stott, the pianist, launched her international career after becoming a prizewinner in the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1978.

Compositional Technique

Busoni's Violin Sonata No. 2 is not written for violin with piano accompaniment, but as a musical partnership between two equal instruments, as emphasized by its original title "Sonata for Piano and Violin."

Per Enoksson performs on a Stradivarius violin from 1697, formerly owned by Rostal, and a Dodd bow.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Busoni, a brilliant piano virtuoso and composer, followed an ancient custom of arranging works by other composers for piano, imposing a Romantic playing technique on them.

Critical Reception

Busoni's music was often found hard to understand by critics because it was difficult to define stylistically, being "too modern to be called romantic, too romantic to be called modem."

Kathryn Stott was recently appointed 'Chevalier dans l'ordre des Arts et Lettres' by the French Government for her achievements as an ambassador of French music.
