Performer Biography
The Young Danish String Quartet was formed in 2001 by four musicians all under 18 years old, and they became the youngest ensemble to win the DR Chamber Music Competition in 2004.
Composer Biography
Carl Nielsen, the composer, was a violinist at the Royal Danish Theatre and his conductor, Johan Svendsen, helped him pursue composition alongside his duties.
Critical Reception
A critic for Politiken, Charles Kjerulf, strongly disliked Nielsen's F major quartet, suggesting that if it was considered good music, then classical masters like Beethoven and Mozart were 'pulling the wool over our eyes'.

Carl Nielsen's only String Quintet was written in 1888, immediately following his G minor string quartet, and premiered the following year.
