Although Maria Callas intended to record a full Mozart recital, the album ultimately included only four Mozart arias, supplemented by two larger pieces by Beethoven and Weber.

Maria Callas had never performed Weber on stage, but she sang the Oberon aria at her Athens Conservatory audition, and it became a regular piece in her Greek concerts.

This album was recorded in December 1963 and January 1964 at Salle Wagram, Paris, with Michel Glotz as producer and Paul Vavasseur as balance engineer.
