1/7Composer Biography
Camilo Mendez has been awarded the Colombian National Prize in Composition, Colombia's highest honor for music composition, on two occasions: in 2009 and 2023.
Compositional Technique
Instrumental preparations, such as affixing aluminum paper to strings or inserting a spring drum into a saxophone, are used extensively in the "Five Fragments" and "Mechanical Resonance" cycles to modify sounds.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Many of the works on this album are inspired by the mysterious, dream-like contemplations on love and nature of the prominent Colombian poet Aurelio Arturo (1906-1974).
Album & Artwork
The album "Distant Fragments" focuses exclusively on solos and duos, showcasing Camilo Mendez at his most personal and reflective, largely eschewing his large-ensemble works.
Compositional Technique
The album's meticulous ordering of works reveals two parallel schemes: a succession of alternating solos and duos, and a deeper ordering based on the larger compositional cycles each piece belongs to.
Performer Biography
William Lane, the violist on this album, is the founder, Artistic & Managing Director, and violist of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Asia's most active professional chamber ensemble dedicated to new music.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Camilo Mendez's works are conceived as parts of monumental cycles exploring particular musical and extra-musical ideas, from which pieces can be excerpted and performed independently.
