Philip Cannon studied composition at the Royal College of Music with Gordon Jacob and also had lessons with Ralph Vaughan Williams and Paul Hindemith.

Composition History
Philip Cannon's String Quartet, written in 1964, was initially rejected by the Cheltenham Festival but later won both the Grand Prix and the Critics' Prize at the Eighth International Composers' Competition in Paris in 1965.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Philip Cannon believed a composer's duty was to communicate, and that music is a social and spiritual art, echoing Bach's dictum: 'Music exists for the glory of God and the delight of men'.
